This was a "glass half full" month for the exchanges sector. Slightly less than half the constituents of the index ended the month in positive territory with the FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index itself posting a positive return of 2.4%.
The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index, which aims to reflect market sentiment and is a key indicator of exchanges performance closed at 50,368.89 on 31 August 2018.
The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index best performer by capital returns in US dollars was CME Group with a 9.8 per cent increase in share price from 29 July to 31 August 2018. The next best performer was Warsaw Stock Exchange with a 6.5 per cent increase, followed by Bolsa Mexicana de Valores SAB de CV with an 6 per cent increase over the same period.
The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index worst performer by capital returns in US dollars was Brazil's B3 SA with a 16.6 per cent decrease in share price from 29 July to 31 August 2018. This was followed by South Africa's JSE with a 12.9 per cent decline and Moscow Exchange with a 11.8 per cent decrease over the same period.
Herbie Skeete, Managing Director, Mondo Visione and also Co-founder of the Index said:
“The global exchange industry has been characterized of late by improving trading volumes. The CME Group, which topped the index leader board this month, reached average daily volume of 15.9 million contracts during August 2018, in line with August 2017 and up 18 percent from July 2018 as the electronification and globalizing of CME's markets continue apace.”
