FTSE Mondo Visione Index Rose 0.9% In April - Global Exchanges Remain Resilient As Trading Volumes Increase Due To Market Volatility

Date 08/05/2023

Exchanges largely posted gains in April as turmoil in the banking sector continued and volatility accelerated throughout the month.

The FTSE Mondo Visione Index rose 0.9%, closing the month at 66,026.84 points, up from the March close of 65,442.75.

London Stock Exchange Group 52.65
Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing  52.33
Deutsche Boerse  35.05

India's BSE was the best performer by capital returns in U.S. dollars, with a 21.8 per cent increase in share price from 1 April 2023 to 30 April 2023. The second-best performer was Dubai Financial Market, with a rise of 18.1 per cent, followed by Saudi Tadawul Group, with a 15.9 per cent increase over the same period.

Chile's Bolsa de Comercio Santiago was the worst performer by capital returns in U.S. dollars, with a 79.6 per cent decrease in share price from 1 April 2023 to 30 April 2023. Multi Commodity Exchange of India was the second-worst performer with a 7.3 per cent decline, followed by Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing with a 6.9 per cent decrease over the same period.

Herbie Skeete, Managing Director of Mondo Visione and Co-founder of the Index said: "Exchanges are increasingly on stock pickers lists due to certain characteristics that make them attractive during recessionary environments. Exchanges are generally countercyclical and can perform well even during economic downturns. During recessions, trading volumes often increase as investors actively manage their portfolios, hedge their positions, or seek alternative investment opportunities. Higher trading volumes can translate into increased revenue for exchanges. Exchanges tend to have diverse revenue streams beyond trading fees with income from listing fees, market data sales, technology services, and other auxiliary offerings. With exchange valuations near multi-year lows, it suggests that the market has already priced in potential downside risks."
