FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index Breaks Through 70,000 Barrier, Index Up 4.9% In August

Date 04/09/2020

Shares in the world's largest exchange operating groups rose by 4.9% in August, with all but 4 of the 30 constituents of the FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index being in positive territory, and the index, which aims to reflect market sentiment and is a key indicator of exchanges performance, setting a new closing all-time high of 70,221 on 31 August, 2020 the last trading day of the month

HKEX ended August as the world's largest exchange operator by market capitalisation.

The top 5 exchanges by market capitalisation at end July were:

Exchange Market Cap (USD bn)
Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing 64.00
CME Group 62.31
Intercontinental Exchange 57.25
London Stock Exchange Group 37.07
Deutsche Boerse 34.75

The best performer by capital returns in US dollars was New Zealand’s NZX with a 12.6 per cent increase in share price from 31 July 2020 to 31 August 2020. The next best performer was Kenya’s Nairobi Securities Exchange with a 11.6 per cent increase, followed by Intercontinental Exchange with a 9.8 per cent increase over the same period.

The worst performer by capital returns in US dollars was Brazil’s B3 with a 12 per cent decrease in share price from 31 July 2020 to 31 August 2020. This was followed by Multi Commodity Exchange of India with a 3.7 per cent decline and India’s BSE with a 1.7 per cent decrease over the same period.

Herbie Skeete, Managing Director, Mondo Visione and Co-founder of the Index said:

"What a week for the NZX. The NZX's public facing website came under sustained cyber-attack. NZX's core trading platforms were not affected, but the exchange’s ability to publish market announcements was impacted, causing trading to be halted for three days. The New Zealand market is currently functioning normally, but the exchange's website continues to be subjected to cyber-attacks. Despite all this, the NZX was the FTSE Mondo Visione Exchange's top performer this month. With companies opting for a dual listing on the ASX and with some companies de-listing from NZX and decamping to ASX, there are mutterings, nothing more than that now, advocating a Tasman Sea merger between NZX and the ASX. For the dual-listed NZX companies, more of their shares are now traded in Australia than New Zealand - food for thought. "
