Global Exchanges Improve In April, FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index Up 4.6% In April, 9.2% Year-to-Date, 6.5% Over 12 Months

Most constituents in the FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index rose in April, with the index, which aims to reflect market sentiment and is a key indicator of exchanges performance closing at 53,937.62 on 30 April 2019, establishing a new closing all-time high.

The best performer by capital returns in US dollars was Euronext with a 9.4 per cent increase in share price from 29 March 2019 to 30 April 2019. The next best performer was CME Group with an 8.7 per cent increase, followed by Intercontinental Exchange with a 6.8 per cent increase over the same period.

The worst performer by capital returns in US dollars was Japan Exchange Group with an 8.9 per cent decrease in share price from 29 March 2019 to 30 April 2019. This was followed by Philippine Stock Exchange with an 8.1 per cent decline and Bulgarian Stock Exchange with a 6.5 per cent decrease over the same period.

Euronext has been locked in an intense battle with Nasdaq over Oslo Bors since the end of last year. Euronext’s offer has been backed by shareholders representing 53.2 per cent of the company, while Oslo Bors has backed Nasdaq's bid. Elsewhere this month, Deutsche Boerse's acquisition of Axioma illustrates the relentless drive by the leading exchange groups from being utility-like trading venues relying on trading and market data as the engine of growth, to being hubs of financial data and technology, exploiting growth opportunities in areas such as data analytics.“
