Herbie Skeete, Managing Director, Mondo Visione and Co-founder of the Index said:

"As the month ended the EU’s securities markets regulator, ESMA, released a statement clarifying the application of the EU's trading obligation for shares following the end of the UK’s transition from the EU on 31 December 2020. Put simply, the share trading obligation determines which venues investors can use to trade stocks. The lack of clarity on the share trading obligation as the UK's departure from EU approaches has led to London-based trading venues ramping up contingency plans with the LSE preparing to open an Amsterdam base of its Turquoise platform as a place to trade EU shares. Sadly, in the end a decision on the share trading obligation is likely to be driven by political considerations and a desire to supplant the City of London as being a premier global financial centre in the European time zone, rather than what’s best for the market."
