FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index Down By 11.5 % In March, Down 13.9% In Q1 2020

The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index was down by 13.9% this quarter as fears of the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic sent global markets plummeting. All equity indices declined sharply in the quarter with the FTSE All World Index falling by 20.0%, the MSCI World was down 20.1% and the S&P 500 closing out its worst quarter since 2008 with a 20 percent loss. No market was spared in the contagion rout.

The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index ended the month down by 11.5% at 53,300.82 points, down from 60,195.23 on 28 February 2020.

Herbie Skeete, Managing Director, Mondo Visione and Co-founder of the Index said:

"Global markets cratered as the world grappled with the health and economic impacts of COVID-19. On the positive side the volatility experienced on all markets since the onset of the pandemic has created a trading boom, with soaring trading volumes across global exchanges."

 

Just three of the constituents of the FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index were in positive territory in March. Croatia's Zagrebacka Burza dd was the best performer by capital returns in US dollars with an 6.3 per cent increase in share price from 28 February 2020 to 31 March 2020. The next two best performers were Singapore Exchange with a 6.1 per cent increase and Japan Exchange Group with a 4.9 per cent increase over the same period.

The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index worst performer in March by capital returns in US dollars was India's BSE with a 37.5 per cent decrease in share price from 28 February 2020 to 31 March 2020. The next two worst performers at the bottom of the table were Dubai Financial Market. with a 36.6 per cent decrease and Brazil's B3 with a 34.9 per cent decrease over the same period.

The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index fell by 13.9 per cent in the first quarter of 2020 as opposed to a rise of 3.1 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2019 and a rise of 4.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2019.

In Q1 2020, the FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index best performer by capital returns in US dollars was the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange with a 0.1 per cent increase in share price from 1 January to 31 March 2020. The next two best performers were Japan Exchange Group with a 0.6 per cent decrease and Singapore Exchange with a 2.0 per cent decrease.

In Q1 2020, the FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index worst performer by capital returns in US dollars was India's BSE with a 44.2 per cent decrease in share price from 1 January to 31 March 2020. The next two worst performers at the bottom of the table were Dubai Financial Market with a 42.5 per cent decrease and Brazil's B3 with a 35.2 per cent decrease.
