FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index:

FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index Down 0.7% in June, Down 13.9 % In Q2 2022

Date 13/07/2022

Exchanges profited from higher than usual trading volumes in the first quarter caused partly by the Russia-Ukraine conflict and rapidly rising interest rate expectations. Volumes have, however, now fallen across all asset classes to a more historically normalised level. The declining volumes are weighing on exchange stocks, and the three months to the end of June saw the FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index down by 13.9%. Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange was the best performing exchange in the quarter, with India's BSE the worst.

The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index ended the month at 65,096.82 points, down from 65,539.43 on 31 May 2022.

The top 5 exchanges by market capitalisation at the end of June were:

Exchange Market Cap (USD bn)
CME Group 73.57
Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing 62.37
Intercontinental Exchange 52.50
London Stock Exchange Group 46.99
Deutsche Boerse 30.64

Herbie Skeete, Managing Director, Mondo Visione and Co-founder of the Index, said:

"The CME and ICE have experienced a significant fall in futures volumes in the second quarter. US stock exchanges are dealing with unpredictability on the regulatory front as well. SEC Chair Gary Gensler has recently asked SEC staff to consider possible rule-making proposals requiring brokers to submit retail investor orders to a new auction process through which firms will bid against each other to fill them. Although years from being implemented, the market is already pricing in its impact on exchanges and brokerages."
