Exchanges Shed More Than 20 Per Cent Share Value In 2011 - FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index Decreased 3.8 Per Cent In December

While investors felt the pinch in 2011, it was the third quarter which experienced significant loss of share value in the exchanges sector, according a year-end report from Mondo Visione.

The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index fell 22.2 percent in Q3 2011, then rounded out the year with a rebound of 4.2 per cent in Q4. Comparatively, Q1 decreased 0.2 per cent and Q2 decreased 2.3 per cent.

Overall, New Zealand’s NZX and the Philippine Stock Exchange were the biggest winners in constituent performance in 2011. While the biggest losers were Greece’s Hellenic Exchange and Poland’s Warsaw Exchange.

Commenting on the Index which closed down at 19,994.53 on 30 December 2011, Herbie Skeete, Managing Director, Mondo Visione and Co-founder of the Index said:

“There was no Santa Claus rally for the exchanges sector in December with the index declining by 3.8 per cent.  Over the year the index declined by 20.9 per cent."

The Index*, which aims to reflect market sentiment and is a key indicator of the exchanges’ performance, experienced a closing all time high of 48,486.36 in December 2007.

The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index best performer by capital returns in US dollars was Greece’s Hellenic Exchanges SA with a 11.3 per cent increase in share price from 30 November to 30 December 2011. The next best performer was Romania’s Bursa de Valori Bucuresti with a 3.9 per cent increase over the same period.

The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index worst performer by capital returns in US dollars was Germany’s Deutsche Boerse with a 13.9 per cent decrease in share price from 30 November to 30 December 2011. This was followed by Poland’s Warsaw Exchange with a 11.8 per cent decrease over the same period.
