Biggest Wins From Exchanges In Three Corners Of The Globe - FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index Bounces Back To Health In Q3 2012 With 5.5 Per Cent Increase - September Index Closed Up 4.8 Per Cent

Date 15/10/2012

The performance of the world’s leading exchanges saw the FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index bounce back to health in quarter three, with a 5.5 per cent increase in value compared to the brutal results of quarter two this year which saw the Index value drop by 11.4 per cent.

Success was distributed around the globe with the biggest winners being Greece’s Hellenic Exchanges SA and India’s Multi Commodity Exchange with increases in share value from Q2 to Q3 2012 being 34.9 per cent and 27.9 per cent consecutively. The next biggest winner was Brazil’s BM&F Bovespa with an 18.9 per cent increase in share value over the same period.

New Zealand’s NZX experienced the biggest loss of quarter three with a 13.8 per cent decrease in share price. The next biggest loser was South Africa’s Johannesburg Stock Exchange with an 8.9 per cent decrease in share price over the same period.

The Index*, which aims to reflect market sentiment and is a key indicator of the exchanges’ performance, saw a 4.8 per cent increase in September 2012. This follows a period of relative stability for the Index.

Commenting on the Index which closed up at 21,494.62 on 28 September 2012, Herbie Skeete, Managing Director, Mondo Visione and Co-founder of the Index said:

"This has been a year of fluctuating fortunes for listed exchanges with most exchanges ending quarter three in positive territory.

Over the next few years exchanges are facing a shake-up in the USA and Europe as regulators establish new rules to boost competition in the profitable derivatives-trading sector. In Europe exchanges are gearing up for the forthcoming battle with new entrants beginning to set up their stalls. We await the next year with interest,” he says.

The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index best performer by capital returns in US dollars was Greece’s Hellenic Exchanges SA with a 21.5 per cent increase in share price from 31 August to 28 September 2012. The next best performer was India’s Multi Commodity Exchange with an 18.1 per cent increase over the same period.

The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index worst performer by capital returns in US dollars was Spain’s Bolsas y Mercados Espanoles with a 7.8 per cent decrease in share price from 31 August to 28 September 2012. This was followed by the London Stock Exchange Group with a 3.5 per cent decrease over the same period.
