After a frenetic start to the year, markets are taking a time out with investors looking for signs that we are near a peak in official interest rates. However, with central banks likely to keep raising interest rates until inflation starts to cool down, it is premature to call a bottom to what has thus far been a torrid year in financial markets.
The FTSE Mondo Visione Index rose 2.4% in July, closing the month at 66,669.08 points, up from the June close of 65,096.82. Twenty-one of the 33 constituents of the index reported increases.

Nasdaq was the best performer by capital returns in US dollars, with an 18.6 per cent increase in share price from 1 July 2022 to 31 July 2022. The second-best performer was Saudi Tadawul Group, with a rise of 16.8 per cent, followed by India's BSE with a 13.3 increase over the same period.
Zagrebacka Burza was the worst performer by capital returns in US dollars, with a 27.8 per cent decrease in share price from 1 July 2022 to 31 July 2022. The Philippine Stock Exchange was the second-worst performer with a 8.9 per cent decline, followed by the Warsaw Stock Exchange with an 8.8 per cent decrease over the same period.

"The trend of the large exchanges being all-round financial businesses continues apace. ICE is a case in point moving to combine mortgage originations, servicing assets, and 'owning' LIBOR in their traditional space. As for the new kids on the block, the new Digital Asset exchanges, they may, in time, inherit the earth but not just yet. The old beasts can still give them a run for their money and make money at the same time. For example, ICE booked a UK1.23 billion gain on the divestment of its stake in cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase. However, don't write off digital assets yet. Every industry has a shakeup - think dot-com - before conquering the world. As for the big beasts of the traditional exchange space, that rumble you hear in the distance may be Sam Bankman-Fried's revving his tanks towards your manicured lawn."
