Winnipeg Commodity Exchange Sets Trading Volume And Open Interest Record Levels

Winnipeg Commodity Exchange (WCE) established several records during the month of October. Record levels in monthly canola volume, total futures and total futures and options volumes were set.

A new monthly volume record in canola futures was set at 208,639 contracts. The previous record for pit trade in a single month for canola was 184,973 contracts set in October 1999.

As a result of these strong canola numbers WCE set a monthly futures volume record and combined futures and options volume record. October 2000 futures volume pit trade was 265,054 contracts, up from the previous record of 255,273 set in October 1996. Total futures and options pit trade for October 2000 was 271,932, compared to the previous record set in October 1996 of 261,579 contracts.

Also, canola established a new record open interest level on October 19, 2000 of 80,607 contracts, surpassing the previous mark of 77,405 set on October 15, 1999. Since October 19, 2000 canola open interest has declined, ending the month at 69,005 contracts, down from the record level but remaining well ahead of previous levels, up 31% from the year ago level of 52,551 contracts.

Total open interest in futures and options contracts reached a recent peak of 128, 256 contracts on October 19, 2000, slightly below the record level of 131,225 contracts which was established on April 14, 2000.
