Winnipeg Commodity Exchange Sets Futures And Options Total Open Interest Record

Winnipeg Commodity Exchange (WCE) established a new record total open interest in futures and options on April 3, 2000 at 126,733 contracts. The previous record for total open interest of 126,711 contracts was set October 14, 1999.

The increase was realized in the futures component of this total open interest record. Futures contracts open interest was 107,648, up from the previous high of 106, 016 set March 15, 2000. There were 19,085 options contracts open.

"We pleased to see the marketplace's increasing interest and continued confidence in WCE products being demonstrated by these record volume trends," said Bruce Love, Director of Marketing for WCE.

Open interest in canola, the most actively traded commodity on WCE, was recorded at 68,888 March 31, 2000 up 21.7% from the same date in 1999. WCE provides the world's premier price discovery and risk management tools for canola. This contract has been trading since 1963; options on canola futures have been available since 1991.

WCE trades futures contracts in: canola, western barley, flaxseed, oats, feed wheat and field peas; and options contracts in: canola, flaxseed, feed wheat and western barley.
