Total volume of trade in futures and options contracts on Winnipeg Commodity Exchange Inc. during October 2004 posted gains of 37.9% from September 2004. Futures volume for October rose 37.4% from September to 199,889 contracts, while options trade increased 89.6% from last month to 2,303 contracts.
Canola futures volume rose 55.9% from a month ago with 176,776 contracts traded during October. Canola options posted a significant increase in volume from last month to 2,249 contracts.
Feed wheat futures volume declined from a month ago but increased 6.9% from October 2003 with 7,323 contracts being traded.
There were 15,790 western barley futures contracts and 54 western barley options contracts traded during October 2004.
Total volume of trade in futures and options contracts was 19.9% lower than the total volume recorded for October 2003.
Crop year-to-date total volume declined slightly during October with 466,264 futures and options contracts being traded since August 1, 2004. This level of trade is 5.4% lower than the total volume for the first three months of the 2003/04 crop year.
