Feed wheat futures contract trade rose 290% from May 2004 and 228.6% from June 2003. There were 10,857 feed wheat futures contracts traded during the month.
Western barley futures volume increased 105.5% from last month and 78.7% from a year ago with 27,081 contracts traded. There were 1,024 western barley options traded during June.
Canola futures volume was up 7.2% from May 2004 at 128,843 contracts. Canola options also posted volume gains with 2,069 options traded. This level of trade is 85.4% higher than last month and 25.3% higher than a year ago.
Total futures and options volume for June was 169,874 contracts representing an increase of 23.4% from last month.
Crop year-to-date volumes remain ahead of last year’s, with a total of 1,923,649 futures and options contracts being traded since August 1, 2003. This is 5.1% over the crop year-to-date volume recorded a year ago. At the end of June open interest stood at 64,446 futures contracts, which is 7.5% higher than the end of June 2003. There were 5,648 options contracts open at the end of the month, representing an increase of 55.9% from WCE options open interest a year ago.
