Winnipeg Commodity Exchange Canola Volume Levels Excees Year-Ago Totals, While Canola Open Interest Reached All-Time Record Levels In June

Canola futures pit trade for the month of June rose 9.5% to 166,799 contracts compared to 152,358 contracts in June 2000. Crop year-to-date canola futures pit trade for 2000/01 came in at 2,083,976 contracts, roughly 20% higher compared to the same period one year earlier.

An open interest record for any WCE futures contract was set by Nov 01 canola futures on June 29, 2001 at 56,522 contracts. Open interest in the canola futures contract has been trending higher since breaking through the 45,414 contract mark on May 24, 2001. Substantial increases were witnessed in total canola futures open interest as of June 30, 2001, up 53.6% than the same date in 2000.

Canola meal futures began trading June 26, 2001.

Feed wheat futures pit trade for the month rose slightly to 13,365 contracts compared to 13,286 contracts in June 2000. Crop year-to-date feed wheat futures pit trade for 2000/2001 came in at 160,514 contracts, well ahead of the 113,757 contracts traded during the same period one year earlier. Increases were also witnessed in open interest levels in feed wheat futures as of June 30, 2001, which were 29.9% higher than the same date in 2000.

Total monthly futures pit trade, for all commodities combined, for the month of June reached 205,620 contracts, 4.2% higher than one year ago. Crop year-to-date total futures pit trade for 2000/01 reached 2,556,201 contracts, well ahead of the 2,186,809 contracts traded during the same period one-year earlier. Total futures open interest, for all commodities combined, was also higher for the month, up 37.4%, at 111,113 contracts as of June 30, 2001, compared to the 80,858 contracts open on June 30, 2000.

As well, increases were witnessed in canola options and total options volume levels for the month of June. Total options pit trade in June saw a 18.4% increase to 8,372 contracts, from June 2000. Total canola options pit trade also experienced substantial increases for the month of June, reaching 8,193 contracts, compared to the year ago level of 6,191 contracts.

Total options and futures pit trade combined was 4.7% higher than one year earlier at 213,992 contracts. Crop year-to-date futures and options pit trade for 2000/01 reached 2,644,049 contracts, well ahead of the 2,256,491 contracts traded during the same period of the 1999/00 crop-year.
