WCE Breaks Annual Volume Records During Tenth Month Of Trading-Year

Winnipeg Commodity Exchange (WCE) surpassed several crop-year volume records during early June. Records in total futures and options crop-year volume, total futures crop-year volume, as well as new highs in canola futures crop-year volume are now being made daily.

On June 7, record volume levels were matched for total futures and options, when crop-year volume reached 2,104,324 contracts, with over 6 weeks still remaining in the trading-year, which ends July 31, 2000. The previous record for total futures and options crop-year volume of 2,101,280 contracts was set at trade-year-end, 1996/97.

"The record trading volume levels we have witnessed at WCE reflect the increasing interest and confidence in the marketplace for WCE products," said Bruce Love, Director of Marketing for WCE.

Also on June 7, 2000, canola futures crop-year volume broke through the previous annual record of 1,619,567 (1998/99) on its way to culminating in a new year-end record.

Following the trend, crop-year total futures volume reached a record 2,062,723 contracts on June 12, 2000, exceeding the previous annual record of 2,059,196 contracts set in 1996/97.

WCE trades futures contracts in: canola, western barley, flaxseed, oats, feed wheat and field peas; and options contracts in: canola, flaxseed, feed wheat and western barley.
