Warsaw Stock Exchange Derivatives And Structured Products Market In May 2010

Derivatives

In May 2010 the trading volume in derivatives was 1.66 million units and was up by almost 57% compared to trading volume in May 2009 (and only by 1.5 thousand down compared to record high level in March 2010). In January-May 2010 the trading volume in derivatives reached almost 6.9 million instruments, up by 32% year-on-year. The number of open interest in all derivative instruments was ca. 204,000 – it was the highest ever number of open interest at month end (up by more than 71% compared to the end of April 2009).

Trading volume in the last 12 months (June 2009 – May 2010) was 15.5 million instruments and was up by 11.9% compared to 2009 trading volume.

In May 2010 the trading volume in WIG20 future contracts was 1.54 million contracts. The number of open interest in WIG20 futures was 107 thousand contracts at the end of May (up by 40% compared to May 2009).

May this year was another month of high interest shown by investors in WIG20 options. Monthly trading volume totalled 70 thousand options. Since the beginning of 2010 the trading volume at the WSE reached 292.2 thousand options. It is almost 70% of the trading volume of options in 2009. The number of open interest in WIG20 options category was record high and reached 71.2 thousand options at the end of May (up by 237% compared to May 2009).

Structured products

At PLN 77.16 million, structured products trading value was more than three times bigger in May than in April 2010. Bonds trading contributed PLN 1.66 million and certificates PLN 75.5 million. Trading volume was ca. 563,000 units.

At the end of May this year there were 131 structured products listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange, including 18 bonds and 113 structured certificates.
