Derivative Instruments
After three quarters of the year, the volume of trading in derivative instruments reached 10,497,211 instruments, equal to ca. 83% of the volume reported in 2008. The volume of trading was 1.38mn instruments in September. This means that September was the second best month of trading in derivative instruments in 2009 and the third best month in the history of derivative instruments trading on the WSE. Except for January, the volume of trading in all the other months of 2009 was more than 1 million instruments.
Although some series of derivative instruments expired in September, the total number of open interest remained high. The number of open interest in all derivative instruments was 122.8 thousand at the end of September.
The detailed statistics (the volume of trading, the number of open interest, the growth rate) are presented in Table 1 and in Figures 1 and 2.
Structured Products
The value of trading in structured products was record-high at PLN45.2mn (ca. EUR10.9mn) in September (PLN189.7mn, ca. EUR45.6mn, year to date), including PLN1.1mn (ca. EUR 264,000) in bonds and PLN44.1mn (ca. EUR10.6mn) in certificates. The volume of trading was over 212 thousand products.
Four new instruments were introduced to trading in September:
• 1 September: WIG20 index bonus structured certificates issued by Deutsche Bank, London.
• 14 September: the WIG20 Profit structured bond issued by SecurAsset S.A.
• 16 and 23 September: the first and the second series of express structured certificates issued by Deutsche Bank AG (London) based on the Hang Seng China Enterprises (HSCE) index.
At the end of September, the WSE listed 68 structured products, including 15 bonds and 53 certificates (35 structured certificates, 2 bonus structured certificate, 1 guaranteed structured certificate, 2 short structured certificates, 13 express structured certificates). The number of structured products listed on the WSE has grown by 23 products (17 certificates and 6 bonds) year to date.
