Velocimetrics Announces Latest TipOff Packet Capture Rates Of 40Gbps Presenting Significant Data Centre Cost Savings

Date 10/03/2015

Velocimetrics, the provider of real-time business performance monitoring and analysis solutions, today announces TipOff can now capture network packets to disk at a sustained rate of 40 Gigabits per second (Gbps) on a single 2U Appliance using the AHA374 GZIP compression/decompression card supplied by AHA Products Group.

Significantly reducing the rack space and disk requirements to do so, this development will enable firms to ensure that as volumes rise in times of market volatility, they can capture and persist to disk up to 40 Gbps, equating to 40 million messages or market data ticks per second, on a single Appliance with 1 RAID controller.

Firms are increasingly seeking to capture data at multiple points as orders and trades traverse complex automated and algorithmic trading systems. In doing so, they can gain a very detailed and accurate understanding of potential sources of operational risk and determine how they can improve trading performance on an on-going basis. As disruptions cause market data volumes to rapidly rise, firms need to ensure they have the capacity to still obtain 100% of data at every acquisition point, enabling all required information to be available for future analysis.

Capturing this level of data has traditionally presented considerable cost issues due to the size of appliance, or appliances, needed along with the amount of associated rack space and RAID controllers required. Today’s announcement will enable TipOff users to effectively measure and manage performance by capturing data at multiple points with a single 2U Appliance at almost double the previous rate, of up to 22Gbps.  In doing so, presenting considerable data centre rack space, heat reduction and power cost savings.

The ability for TipOff to achieve this new capture benchmark has been possible due to the solution’s compatibility with the AHA range of compression cards and builds on TipOff’s long, stable history of deploying at least 10Gbps capture and compression in every TipOff Appliance to date.

This combined solution enables TipOff to capture 40Gbps of data from both inside applications and on the network, which is then sent to the AHA card.  Employing ASIC technology, the card then compresses the data by up to 80% before it is rapidly persisted to disk for storage and later user investigation. This approach will typically enable 5 times the amount of data to be stored to disk on a single Appliance of this size, than if it were saved in its raw format.

Once on the disk, TipOff can then be used to analyse the data and gain detailed network, middleware or market data insights. Alternatively, users can also feed the data directly into their own specific analysis tools, providing for instance risk and regulatory evaluations.

Commenting on this announcement Steve Rodgers, Engineering Lead at Velocimetrics stated:

‘Data centre storage, power and heating are becoming big budget line items for trading firms. Today’s announcement presents the potential for significant savings in these areas, whilst also ensuring users can retain all necessary information about trade performance across increasingly complex environments.’

Paul Langworthy, Director of Sales from AHA Products Group added:

AHA is proud to be a technology partner with Velocimetrics. Our goal is to provide solutions that reduce costs and maximize performance, so we are pleased to hear about the new level of performance reached by the TipOff solution using AHA hardware. Velocimetrics' ability to minimize power, heating and storage while delivering such extremely high performance is a reflection of their exceptional design abilities.
