The eleventh meeting of the Informal Brexit Liaison Group, set up by the House of Lords Liaison Committee in November 2016, was held on Monday 26 February 2018.

The Group held a discussion with the Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP, Chair of the House of Commons Committee for Exiting the European Union.

Mr Benn outlined the main activities of his Committee since his previous discussion with the Group. Both his Committee and the House of Lords EU Committee had visited Brussels (on separate visits) the previous week and topics discussed included the progress of the current negotiations.

The Group also discussed what the UK might learn from UK agreements with third countries; the Government’s sectoral analyses (parts of which the Commons Committee had published) and relations between the UK Parliament and parliamentarians from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

As usual, the Committee Chairmen present updated the Group on recent and planned Brexit-related scrutiny. The EU Committee would shortly discuss the question of scrutiny during the transition period. The Delegated Powers and Regulatory Reform Committee, having reported on the EU Withdrawal Bill whilst it was in the House of Commons, was now being encouraged to produce early reports on other bills.

The Group is expected to meet next on Wednesday 18 April 2018.
