TSX Venture Statistics – October 2004 Background Commentary

Graduates
  • There were 2 graduates to the Toronto Stock Exchange in October 2004, bringing the total number of YTD graduates to 49. These graduates represent 33.1% of the senior market's new listings this year compared to 40.4% for the same period last year.

  • So far in 2004, 14 TSX Venture companies have been acquired by/merged with TSX listed companies.

Year-To-Date Equity Financing

  • As of the end of October, there were 1,737 financing deals on TSX Venture, raising a total of $3.3 billion, an increase of 106.3% compared to last year’s numbers of $1.6 billion through 1,713 financing deals.

  • Year-over-year, the average size of the financings has increased from $0.93 million to $1.90 million, an increase of 104.3%.

  • So far this year, the Mining sector is leading the way in financing, raising a total of $1.9 billion (representing 57.6% of the total). The Oil & Gas sector is second with $725.0 million (representing 22.0% of the total). The Technology sector has captured 6.9% of the financing with $226.8 million raised.

  • South Atlantic Ventures Ltd., a mining company, completed the largest single financing year-to-date, raising $160 million through a public offering deal in June. EuroZinc Mining Corporation, another mining company, completed the next largest single financing year-to-date, raising $78.5 million through a private placement deal in April 2004.

Year-To-Date Going Public Activity

  • There were 10 new listings in the month of October. Year-to-date new listings have increased 101.8% compared to the same period in 2003.

  • The Capital Pool Company program has generated 61.1% of the new listings, 19.5% have come from the Mining sector and 8.0% have come from the Oil & Gas sector.

  • The regional breakdown of new listings is as follow: Alberta (25.7%), British Columbia (20.4%), Ontario (23.0%), Quebec (20.4%), Manitoba and Saskatchewan (3.5%), Atlantic Canada (0.9%) and Foreign (6.2%).

  • At the end of October 2004, there were 25 Reverse Take Over transactions, 55 Qualifying Transactions and 93 IPOs (including CPCs).

S&P TSX Venture Index

  • The S&P/TSX Venture Composite Index closed at 1,630.02 at the end of October, a decrease of 6.9% from the beginning of 2004. The S&P/TSX Composite Index was up 7.9%, the NASDAQ Composite decreased 1.4% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average decreased 4.1% over the same period.

Market Capitalization 1

  • The market capitalization for TSX Venture Exchange equities was $21.5 billion at the end of October, an increase of 0.5% from September 2004 and an increase of 23.6% from the same period last year.

Financing

  • There were a total of 11 private placements in the month of October, raising a total of $2.3 million. This represents a decrease of 76.3% compared to the $9.7 million raised in September 2004.

  • For the ten months ended October 2004, there were 100 financing deals on NEX, raising a total of $41.7 million. Comparable figures for 2003 are not available because NEX was launched in August 2003.

Trading Activity for the Month

  • Total volume traded was 35.5 million shares, representing a rise of 20.3% over September 2004 and a drop of 6.1% from October 2003.

  • Total value traded was $5.9 million, an increase of 22.9% from the $4.8 million traded in September 2004 and a decrease of 42.2% from October 2003.

  • The total number of transactions was 4,198, an increase of 22.7% from September 2004 and a decrease of 13.0% from October 2003.

  • 4 companies graduated to TSX Venture in the month of October.

Market Capitalization

  • The market capitalization for NEX equities was $302.2 million at the end of October 2004, a decrease of 5.1% from September 2004 and an increase of 36.6% from October 2003.
