TSX Venture President Highlights Growth Of Junior Market Across Canada - Linda Hohol Honoured At Chamber Luncheon As Calgary’s Distinguished Business Leader Of The Year

Date 29/09/2005

In a speech today in Calgary, TSX Venture Exchange President Linda Hohol credited low Alberta taxes this year helping Albertans and Alberta companies achieve new heights in 2005. “Low taxes may be one reason Alberta’s entrepreneurial spirit is strong today. But it isn’t the only one. That’s because taxes don’t become obstacles for entrepreneurs until there are profits. But profits don’t come about unless there's revenue. And revenue doesn’t start until a business has the capital to get up and running in the first place. Through our predecessor exchanges, TSX Venture is proud to have played a role in that since 1913 in helping companies raise capital they need to build their business."

Ms. Hohol leads TSX Venture Exchange, Canada’s public venture capital marketplace – a marketplace that provides emerging companies with access to capital while offering investors a quality market in which to make venture investments. In her role as the head of TSX Venture, Ms. Hohol has overseen the development of the venture market outside Western Canada to become a truly national marketplace. Today there is strong growth in TSX Venture listings in the core markets in Alberta and B.C. as well as growing acceptance in Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada.

“Forty-three per cent of TSX Venture’s new listings this year have been based in Ontario and Quebec, while Alberta and B.C. were home to 53 per cent,” added Ms. Hohol. “That’s a significant change. For many years we saw very few listings from Ontario and Quebec.”

In all there are nearly 2,000 issues on TSX Venture Exchange with market capitalization topping $26 billion.

Ms. Hohol’s remarks today come three years after her first presentation to the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. Today’s luncheon celebrates her award as 2005 Distinguished Business Leader Award winner by the University of Calgary's Haskayne School of Business and the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. Copies of her remarks are available at tsx.com.
