TSX Venture Exchange Summary (September 2003)

The following is a brief overview of statistic highlights from the TSX Venture Exchange for September 2003.

Graduates

  • There were 3 graduates to the Toronto Stock Exchange in September 2003. The total number of year-to-date graduates has increased to 37. This represents 43.0% of the senior market's new listings this year compared to 19.7% for the same period last year.
  • Additionally, 6 TSX Venture companies were acquired/merged with TSX listed companies in 2003.
Year-To-Date Financing
  • As of the end of September, there were 1,480 financing deals on TSX Venture that raised a total of $1.35 billion, an increase of 27.9% from the same time last year of $1.06 billion through 1,453 financing deals.
  • IPO activity on TSX Venture this month more than doubled from the same time last year with companies raising $34.2 million. This represents almost half of all IPO financings this year.
  • The average size of the financings increased from $0.73 million to $0.91 million compared to a year ago, an increase of 24.7%.
  • The Mining sector led the way in financing, raising a total of $613.9 million (representing 45% of the total). The Oil & Gas sector followed with $370.2 million (representing 27% of the total). The Technology sector captured 8% of the financing with $109.5 million raised as of the end of September 2003.
  • InterOil Corporation, a company that specializes in refining petroleum, completed the largest single year-to-date financing, raising $68.8 million through a private placement. Amerigo Resources Ltd., a Mining company, completed the next largest single financing deal, raising $26 million through a private placement in June 2003.
Going Public Activity
  • There were 9 new listings in the month of September, bringing the year-to-date total to 50. Year-to-date new listings declined 25.4% compared to the same period last year.
  • 32% of the new listings were from the mining sector. The Capital Pool program generated 36% of the new listings and the technology sector accounted for 14% of the new listings.
  • The regional breakdown of new listings is as follow: British Columbia (26%), Alberta (28%), Ontario (20%), Quebec (20%), Manitoba (2%) and Foreign (4%).
  • As of September 30, 2003, there were 31 Reverse Take Over transactions, 64 Qualifying Transactions and 37 IPOs (including CPCs).
Index
  • The S&P/TSX Venture Composite Index closed at 1,393.15 on September 30, 2003. This represented an increase of 29.7% since the beginning of 2003. The S&P/TSX Composite Index was up 12.2%, the NASDAQ Composite was up 33.8% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 11.2% since the beginning of January 2003.
Market Capitalization
  • The market capitalization for TSX Venture Exchange equities was $14.74 billion as of August 29, 2003 - an increase of 8.1% from August 2003 and an increase of 47.1% from the same period last year.
