TSX Venture Exchange Summary For May 2003

The following is a brief overview of statistic highlights from the TSX Venture Exchange for May 2003.

Graduates

  • There were 4 graduates to the Toronto Stock Exchange in May 2003. The total number of YTD graduates has increased to 21. This represents 47.6% of the senior market's new listings this year compared to 14.6% for the same period last year.

Financing

  • As of May 30, there were 835 financing deals on the TSX venture market that raised a total of $661.8 million, an increase of 20.4% from the same time last year of $549.8 million through 905 financing deals.

  • The average size of the financings increased from $0.61 million to $0.79 million compared to a year ago, an increase of 29.5%.

  • The Mining sector led the way in financing, raising a total of $300.5 million (representing 45% of the total). The Oil & Gas sector followed with $176.4 million financing (representing 27% of the total). The Technology sector captured 11% of the financing market with $72.6 million raised as of the end of May 2003.

  • Celtic Exploration Ltd., an oil & gas company, completed the largest financing deal in the month of May, raising $17.8 million through a private placement. Shellcase Ltd., a technology company, completed the largest single year-to-date financing, raising USD $13.2 million in February (approximately CDN $20.0 million) through a private placement.

Going Public Activity

  • There were 9 new listings in the month of May. Year-to-date new listings declined 41.5% compared to the same period last year.

  • The Capital Pool program generated 46% of the new listings. 38% of the new listings were from the mining sector.

  • The regional breakdown of new listings is as follow: British Columbia (17%), Alberta (17%), Ontario (29%), Quebec (33%) and Manitoba (4%).

  • As of May 30, 2003, there were 15 Reverse Take Over transactions, 36 Qualifying Transactions and 17 IPOs (including CPCs).

Index

  • The S&P/TSX Venture Composite Index closed at 1,090.37 on May 30, 2003. This represented an increase of 1.5% since the beginning of 2003. The S&P/TSX Composite Index was up 3.7%, the NASDAQ Composite was up 17.7% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 6.1% since the beginning of January 2003.

Market Capitalization

  • The market capitalization for TSX Venture Exchange equities was $11.69 billion as of May 30, 2003 - an increase of 2.7% from April 2003.
