TSX Venture Exchange Summary For March 2003

The following is a brief overview of statistic highlights from the TSX Venture Exchange for March 2003.

Graduates

  • There were 9 graduates to the Toronto Stock Exchange in March 2003. The total number of YTD graduates has increased to 14. This represents 53.8% of the senior market's new listings this year compared to 27.8% for the same period last year.

Financing

  • As of March 31, there were 567 financing deals on the TSX venture market that raised a total of $456.9 million, an increase of 71.9% from the same time last year of $265.4 million through 540 financing deals.

  • The average size of the financings increased from $0.49 million to $0.81 million compared to a year ago, an increase of 58.3%.

  • The Mining sector led the way in financing, raising a total of $225.4 million (representing 49% of the total YTD). The Oil & Gas sector followed closely with $133.2 million financing (representing 29% of the total). The Technology sector captured 10% of the financing market with $46.3 million raised as of the end of March 2003.

  • Canico Resource Corp., a mining company, completed the largest financing deal in the month of March, raising $17.2 million through a private placement. Shellcase Ltd., a technology company, completed the largest single financing year-to-date as of the end of March 2003, raising USD $13.2 million in February (approximately CDN $20.0 million using average exchange rate for February 2003) through a private placement.

New Listings

  • There were 6 new listings in the month of March. Year-to-date new listings declined 51.9% compared to the same period last year.

  • The Capital Pool program generated 46% of the new listings. 38% of the new listings were from the mining sector.

  • Regional breakdown of new listings is as follow: British Columbia (15%), Alberta (15%), Ontario (38%) and Quebec (31%).

Index

  • The S&P/TSX Venture Composite Index closed at 1,106.55 on March 31, 2003. This represented a decrease of 1.4% since the beginning of 2003. Other North American indices also experienced a decline: S&P/TSX Composite Index was down 4.1%, the NASDAQ Composite was down 1.1% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 4.2% since the beginning of January 2003.
