TSX Venture Exchange Summary (December 2003)

The following is a brief overview of statistic highlights from the TSX Venture Exchange for December 2003.

Graduates

  • There were 3 Graduates to the Toronto Stock Exchange in December 2003. The total number of TSX Venture graduates in 2003 increased 88% to 47 from 25 in 2002.
  • The total number of Graduates represented 36.7% of the senior market's new listings in 2003 compared to 23.4% in 2002.
  • Additionally, 12 TSX Venture companies were acquired/merged with TSX listed companies in 2003.
Financing
  • In 2003, there were 2,276 financing deals on TSX Venture that raised a total of $2.38 billion, an increase of 65.3% from the same time last year of $1.44 billion through 1,911 financing deals.
  • The average size of the financings increased from $0.75 million to $1.05 million compared to a year ago, an increase of 40%.
  • The Mining sector led the way in financing in 2003, raising a total of $1.28 billion (represents 54% of the total financing). This was an increased of 124.3% comparing to the $572.6 million raised in 2002.
  • The Oil & Gas sector followed in second place with $508.5 million raised (representing 21% of the total). This was an increased of 26.4% compared to the $402.3 million raised in 2002.
  • The Technology sector captured 8% of the financing with $179.8 million raised in 2003, which represented an increase of 7% from the $168 million raised in 2002. ยท
  • InterOil Corporation, a company that specializes in refining petroleum, completed the largest single financing in 2003, raising $68.8 million through a private placement in September 2003. Amerigo Resources Ltd., a Mining company, completed the next largest single financing deal, raising $26 million through a private placement in June 2003.
  • In 2003, the largest IPO was Asia Gold Corp., a mineral exploration company, raising $15 million in December. The largest public offering on TSX Venture was done by Global (GMPC) Holdings Inc., an insurance and investment company that raised $10.2 million in October.
Going Public Activity
  • There were 10 new listings in the month of December, bringing the 2003 total to 76. The new listings declined 13.6% compared to 2002.
  • 37% of the new listings or 28 companies were from the mining sector. This represented an increase of 47% compared to the 19 new mining listings in 2002. The Capital Pool program generated 38% and the technology sector accounted for 9% of the new listings.
  • The regional breakdown of new listings is as follow: British Columbia (32%), Alberta (26%), Ontario (17%), Quebec (21%), Manitoba (1%) and Foreign (3%).
  • In 2003, there were 46 Reverse Take Over transactions (RTOs), an increase of 27.8% compared to the 36 RTOs in 2002. There were 90 Qualifying Transactions and 57 IPOs (including CPCs).
Index
  • The S&P/TSX Venture Composite Index closed at 1,751.28 on December 31, 2003. This represented an increase of 63.1% since the beginning of 2003. The S&P/TSX Composite Index was up 24.3%, the NASDAQ Composite was up 50% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 25.3% since the beginning of January 2003.
Market Capitalization
  • The market capitalization for TSX Venture Exchange equities was $20.92 billion as of December 31, 2003 - an increase of 6.4% from November 2003 and an increase of 88.2% from 2002.
