TSX Venture Exchange Summary - August 2003

The following is a brief overview of statistic highlights from the TSX Venture Exchange for August 2003.

Graduates

  • There were 5 graduates to the Toronto Stock Exchange in August 2003. The total number of year-to-date graduates has increased to 34. This represents 44.2% of the senior market's new listings this year compared to 15.9% for the same period last year.

  • Additionally, 5 TSX Venture companies were acquired/merged with TSX listed companies in 2003.

Year-To-Date Financing

  • As of the end of August, there were 1,291 financing deals on the TSX venture market that raised a total of $1.11 billion, an increase of 10.8% from the same time last year of $1.0 billion through 1,336 financing deals.

  • The average size of the financings increased from $0.75 million to $0.86 million compared to a year ago, an increase of 14.7%.

  • The Mining sector led the way in financing, raising a total of $504.7 million (representing 46% of the total). The Oil & Gas sector followed with $327.2 million (representing 30% of the total). The Technology sector captured 9% of the financing with $100.7 million raised as of the end of August 2003.

  • Alamos Gold Inc., a Mining company, completed the largest financing deal in August, raising $12.3 million through a private placement. Amerigo Resources Ltd., a Mining company, completed the largest single year-to-date financing, raising $26 million through a private placement in June 2003.

Going Public Activity

  • There were 4 new listings in the month of August, bringing the year-to-date total to 41. Year-to-date new listings declined 33.9% compared to the same period last year.

  • 37% of the new listings were from the mining sector. The Capital Pool program generated 39% of the new listings and the technology sector accounted for 15% of the new listings.

  • The regional breakdown of new listings is as follow: British Columbia (29%), Alberta (20%), Ontario (24%), Quebec (22%), Manitoba (3%) and Foreign (3%).

  • As of August 29, 2003, there were 25 Reverse Take Over transactions, 60 Qualifying Transactions and 30 IPOs (including CPCs).

Index

  • The S&P/TSX Venture Composite Index closed at 1,316.9 on August 29, 2003. This represented an increase of 22.6% since the beginning of 2003. The S&P/TSX Composite Index was up 13.5%, the NASDAQ Composite was up 35.6% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 12.9% since the beginning of January 2003.

Market Capitalization

  • The market capitalization for TSX Venture Exchange equities was $13.63 billion as of August 29, 2003 - an increase of 9.6% from July 2003 and an increase of 26.8% from the same period last year.
