TSX Venture Exchange 2002 Year-To-Date Summary (December 2002)

The following is a brief overview of statistic highlights from the TSX Venture Exchange for December and year-end 2002.

Graduates

  • There were 3 graduates to the Toronto Stock Exchange in December 2002. The total number of 2002 graduates was 27. This represented 22% of the senior market's new listings in 2002 compared to 28% in 2001.
Financing
  • In 2002, there were 1,911 financing deals on the TSX venture market that raised a total of $1.44 billion, an increase of 33% from the same time last year of $1.08 billion through 1,540 financing deals.
  • The average size of each financing in 2002 was $0.75 million, an increase of 7% from an average of $0.70 million in 2001.
  • The Mining sector led the way in financing, raising a total of $572.6 million. This represented 40% of the total financing on TSX Venture in 2002. The Oil & Gas sector followed with $402.3 million of financing, which accounted for 28%. The Technology sector captured 12% of the total financing with $170 million raised.
  • EAGC Venture Corp., a gold mining company, raised $65.8 million through a private placement in November 2002, the largest single deal in 2002. VOXCOM Incorporated completed the next largest single deal, raising $35.9 million through a private placement in July 2002.
New Listings
  • There were 11 new listings in the month of December, bringing the 2002 total to 88. New listings declined 48% compared to 2001. (This excludes the 108 Montreal Exchange transfers in October 2001).
  • The Capital Pool program generated 49% of the new listings. 22% of the new listings were from the mining sector and 9% were from the oil & gas sector.
  • Regional breakdown of new listings is as follow: BC (28%), Alberta (36%), Saskatchewan & Manitoba (3%), Ontario (15%), Quebec (13%), Atlantic Canada (2%) and Foreign (2%).
Index
  • The S&P/TSX Venture Composite Index closed at 1074.08 on December 31, 2002. This represented an annual increase of 4% in 2002. This compares favourably with other North American indices: S&P/TSX Composite Index was down 14%, the NASDAQ Composite was down 32% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 17% in 2002.
