At present, Canada has 358 biotechnology companies, the second-greatest number in the world behind the United States. The biotechnology industry is represented in every province, with the largest concentrations in Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia, respectively. Spending in biotech research and development in 1999 was $827 million, up 19 percent from 1998 and growth in biotechnology R&D spending for all Canadian companies is expected to reach almost $1.5 billion in 2002.
