TSX Group Offers New Stock Symbol Codes - 43 “Notes” Have “.NT” Designation Added To The Stock Symbol

Date 27/07/2004

Effective today, there are new stock symbol designation codes for certain non-convertible note securities that trade on Toronto Stock Exchange. This is the first part of a project aimed at bringing additional clarity to the differences between various types of securities that trade on Toronto Stock Exchange and TSX Venture Exchange. Robert Fabes, Senior Vice President, Toronto Stock Exchange, says these changes will help investors understand what they own. “The benefits to investors will come from the greater transparency to the market resulting from having clear and consistently applied stock symbol formats reflecting the voting attributes of the securities while eliminating the inconsistencies between the labelling of share classes.”

A number of stock symbols for certain securities are being modified to include additional two-character identifiers.

In April 2004, Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) announced the changes following consultation with the various stakeholder communities. Today’s change involves the addition of the new trading symbol extension “.NT” to designate each affected security as a note security.

For example:

Root symbol: AAP
Note extension: NT
New security symbol: AAP.NT

In the case that an additional identifier is added to indicate the series of the issue, the new security symbol would be AAP.NT.A, where A is the series identifier.

“We have communicated changes to issuers, brokers, traders and, of course, the investing public to ensure everyone understands how these changes will impact how they see their stocks displayed on screens and in the newspapers,” added Mr. Fabes.

Future changes this fall will include new symbol extensions for securities that have non-conventional voting structures, such as non-voting, multiple voting and subordinate voting shares, on both Toronto Stock Exchange and TSX Venture Exchange.
