It was the 16th record high close for the 300 Index in 2000.
The year 2000 has been significant on a number of fronts for the TSE. In addition to reaching 10,000, the TSE 300 also broke the 9,000 barrier on February 4, 2000. TSE trading records have been smashed for: Daily Volume - 326.5 million shares on February 17; Daily Value - $6.08 billion on March 17th; Daily Transactions - 249,722 on March 6; Monthly Value - $87.5 billion in February.
These are all significant events as the TSE heads down the road to demutualization. It is expected this will become effective in early April and the TSE will officially become Toronto Stock Exchange Inc. -- a for-profit corporation.
The fully automated Toronto Stock Exchange consistently ranks among the world's top exchanges by market capitalization and trading volume. In 2000, the average daily value of TSE trading has exceeded $3 billion. The TSE provides investors with a well-regulated, fair and accessible marketplace.
