Total option volume at CBOE hit a new year-to-date record for the end of June with 170,954,843 contracts (113,116,570 calls and 57,838,273 puts) which is 51% ahead of the previous June year-to-date record of 113,104,596 contracts, set at the end of June, 1999. During the month of June, a total of 24,412,825 option contracts (16,330,180 calls and 8,082,645 puts) were traded at CBOE, a 30% increase over the year ago June volume of 18,759,310 contracts. Open interest in all CBOE listed options stood at 44,947,915 contracts at month's end, an incredible 90% more than the close of June last year. Year-to-date volume in stock options reached a record 144,956,120 contracts (101,653,373 calls and 43,302,747 puts), an increase of 70.5% over the year-to-date total of 85,035,277 contracts traded at the end of June, 1999.
During the month of June a total of 21,296,593 stock option contracts (14,846,199 calls and 6,450,394 puts) traded, an increase of 49% over June1999's stock option volume of 14,267,549 contracts. Open interest in stock options trading stood at 41,548,281 contracts (26,366,624 calls and 15,181,657 puts) at the end of June, a staggering increase of 107% over the close of June 1999.
Options on Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) were the volume leader for equity options at CBOE, with average daily volume of 40,235 contracts (equivalent to 4.02 million shares per day). Other volume leaders at CBOE were options on America Online, Inc. (AOL) with an average daily volume of 31,590 contracts; Cisco Systems, Inc. (CSCO) with an average daily volume of 30,276 contracts; and Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM) with an average daily volume of 23,415 contracts.
Total index option volume for June at CBOE was 3,114,136 contracts (1,483,229 calls and 1,630,907 puts) compared to 4,485,744 contracts in June 1999. Trading in S&P 500® Index options (SPX) reached 1,492,008 contracts (708,739 calls and 783,269 puts) and open interest stood at 1,516,370, versus 1,693,827 from 1999. Trading volume for the month of June in the S&P 100® Index options (OEX) was 1,060,082 contracts (502,697 calls and 557,385 puts). Open interest in OEX options stood at 186,350 contracts at the end of June.
