Trading On The Warsaw Stock Exchange: October 2012

  • Session trading in shares on the Main Market reached PLN 16.0 billion, as compared to PLN 20.3 billion in October 2011, the highest since March 2012.
  • The volume of trading in derivative instruments was 0.8 million as compared to 1.2 million in October 2011.[1]
  • The value of issues on Catalyst at the end of October (+44.9% YoY) crossed the mark of PLN 50.0 billion for the first time.
  • The total monthly volume of trading in electricity on the WSE markets increased by 76.8% year on year, mainly driven by an increase in the volume of forward transactions, while the volume of trading in property rights increased by 50.5%.

Main Market
 
The total turnover in shares was PLN 16.4 billion in October 2012, as compared to PLN 20.9 billion in October 2011 (down by 21.8%). Session trading was PLN 16.0 billion, the highest monthly turnover since March 2012. The incremental value of session trading year to date was down by 26.7% and the value of block trades by 15.8%.

Market activity as measured by the number of session transactions decreased year on year and year to date in October and stood at 1.0 million in October 2012 and 9.8 million year to date in 2012.

The WIG index gained 5.0% year on year and 15.0% year to date at the end of October 2012.

The value of session trading was PLN 80.0 million in October 2012, as compared to PLN 107.5 million in October 2011. The number of session transactions decreased to 67.1 thousand in October 2012 from 78.7 thousand in October 2011. The total value of trading in January-October 2012 was PLN 1.1 billion, as compared to PLN 1.8 billion in January-October 2011.

The NCIndex lost 19.0% year on year and 15.3% year to date at the end of October 2012.

Derivative instruments

Futures contracts: The monthly volume of trading in index futures was 0.57 million contracts, a decrease compared to 1.10 million in October 2011. The incremental volume of trading year to date was 7.7 million, a decrease of 32.5% year on year. The number of open interest in index futures was 98.1 thousand at the end of October 2012, an increase of 5.6% year on year. The volume of trading in single-stock futures (63.8 thousand) was lower than in October 2011 (64.3 thousand). The volume of trading in currency futures was 102.3 thousand in October 2012, as compared to 18.1 thousand in October 2011.1)

Options: The volume of trading in index options grew by 26.1% year on year. The incremental volume was 544.1 thousand year to date in 2012, as compared to 815.0 thousand in 2011.

Structured products, investment certificates and ETFs

Structured products and investment certificates: The value of trading in structured products and investment certificates was PLN 18.7 million.
 
ETFs: The value of trading in ETFs was PLN 7.7 million in October 2012. The incremental value of trading in ETFs year to date decreased by 14.9% year on year to PLN 210.2 million.

Debt instruments

Catalyst
 
The monthly value of session trading was PLN 146.1 million, an increase of 22.2% as compared to PLN 119.5 million in October 2011. Session trading in January-October 2012 was PLN 1.4 billion and total trading was PLN 2.5 billion, an increase of 29.6% and 111.4%, respectively, year on year. Catalyst sees a steadily growing number of transactions. It grew by 65% year on year to 3.9 thousand in October 2012, while the incremental number of transactions was 34.1 thousand year to date, an increase of 34.5% year on year.

The nominal value of listed instruments (corporate, municipal and mortgage bonds) crossed the mark of PLN 50 billion for the first time at the end of October and reached PLN 51.0 billion.

Treasury BondSpot Poland

The value of cash transactions was PLN 37.9 billion in October 2012, an increase of 22.5% year on year. The incremental value of cash transactions year to date was PLN 395.7 billion. The value of conditional transactions increased by 35.8% year on year and was the highest since May 2011.

Electricity and property rights [3]

Electricity: Forward transactions on the WSE Group electricity markets reached 14.0 TWh in October 2012, an increase of 90.5% as compared to 7.3 TWh in October 2011. Spot transactions in electricity reached 1.8 TWh, an increase of 13.9% year on year. The incremental volume of spot transactions year to date stood at 17.5 TWh, a decrease of 0.8% year on year; the volume of forward transactions was down by 9.1%.

Property rights: The monthly volume of trading in property rights was 4.9 TWh, an increase of 50.5% as compared to 3.3 TWh in October 2011. The trading volume in January-October 2012 increased by 18.2% year on year and reached 50.6 TWh.

The WSE held 23 trading sessions in October 2012, two more than in October 2011.
