Trading On The Warsaw Stock Exchange - November 2011

  • Eleven months into the year, 2011 is the best year in the history of the WSE as measured by the value of session trading (PLN 235.6 billion).
  • The total value of session trading and block trades on the Main Market crossed the mark of PLN 0.25 trillion within one calendar year for the first time ever.
  • The monthly value of session trading was PLN 19.8 billion in November.
  • The monthly volume of trading in index futures increased 13.0% year on year.

Main Market 

The value of session trading on the Main Market at PLN 19.8 billion in November 2011 decreased by 9.0% year on year (PLN 21.7 billion in November 2010) as the main stock exchange indices went down. The incremental value of trading year to date was PLN 235.6 billion, an increase of 24.1% year on year and the highest annual figure in the history of the WSE.

The WIG index lost 12.9% year on year and 16.8% year to date at the end of November 2011.

NewConnect

The value of session trading was PLN 82.6 million in November 2011 and the incremental value of trading year to date was PLN 1.8 billion, as compared to PLN 201.8 million and PLN 1.6 billion, respectively, in 2010. The incremental value of trading in January-November increased by 13.1% year on year.

The NCIndex lost 34.8% year on year and 34.9% year to date at the end of November 2011.

Derivative instruments

Futures contracts: The monthly volume of trading in index futures was 1.1 million contracts in November 2011, an increase of 13% year on year. The volume of trading in single-stock futures in November grew by 43.3% year on year. The volume of trading in January-November more than doubled. In November, the WSE introduced new futures contracts on stocks of five companies, including the first contracts on a foreign stock (Kernel). At the end of November, contracts on stocks of 18 companies were in trading on the WSE.

The volume of trading in currency futures on the WSE remained high: it increased by 47.2% year on year in November. The incremental volume of trading year to date was 182.9 thousand contracts, an increase of 67.1% year on year compared to 109.5 thousand a year earlier.

Options: The volume of trading was 47.0 thousand in November 2011, as compared to 73.4 thousand in November 2010. The incremental volume of trading in options year to date was 862 thousand, an increase of 41.7% year on year.

Structured products, investment certificates and ETF 

Structured products and investment certificates: The value of trading in investment certificates and structured products was PLN 32.4 million in November (structured products: PLN 27.1 million; investment certificates: PLN 5.3 million). The incremental value of trading in structured products year to date at PLN 326.2 million increased by 25.9% and the value of trading in certificates at PLN 161.7 million increased by 70.4% year on year.

ETF: The value of trading in ETFs was PLN 21.8 million in November 2011, as compared to PLN 21.3 million in November 2010. The incremental value of trading was PLN 268.9 million year to date.

Fixed-income instruments

          Catalyst

The value of listed bond issues (corporate, municipal and mortgage bonds) was PLN 38.3 billion at the end of November 2011, an increase of 79.5% year on year. The value of session trading was PLN 68.1 million in November 2011 and PLN 1.1 billion in January – November 2011, as compared to PLN 121.6 million in November 2010 and PLN 1.3 billion in January – November 2010. The value of block trades in November crossed the mark of PLN 1 billion, representing 88.2% of the value of block trades on Catalyst in 2011.

The first fixed-income instruments denominated in a foreign currency were newly listed on Catalyst in November: bonds issued by PKO Finance AB with a nominal value of EUR 800 million.

          Treasury BondSpot Poland

The value of cash transactions in November increased by 171.4% year on year and reached PLN 32.8 billion, which was the second highest monthly figure after March 2011. The value of conditional transactions increased from PLN 28.4 billion to PLN 50.5 billion (up by 77.7%). The incremental value of cash transactions in January-November increased by 134.8% year on year; the value of conditional transactions was over PLN 700 billion, an increase of 347.5%.

The WSE held 20 trading sessions in November 2011, the same as in November 2010.
