Trading On The Warsaw Stock Exchange: July 2013

  • The value of session trading in equities on the Main Market reached PLN 15.9 billion in July, up by 1.2% versus the respective figure for July 2012.
  • The total trading volume in equities on the Main Market has reached PLN 151.0 billion YTD, which translates into a growth rate of 23.9% year on year.
  • The total trading volume in index futures dropped by 17.0% year on year in July 2013, down to 558.6 thousand contracts monthly.
  • The total trading volume in currency futures recorded more than a three-fold growth, to 332.3 thousand contracts in July 2013 versus 100.9 thousand in July 2012.
  • July saw the highest trading volume on forward transactions in electricity market in 2013, reaching 16.3 TWh.
  • The monthly volume of trading on the market of property rights reached 1.8 TWh in July, down by 47.3% versus July 2013.
  • The total volume of natural gas turnover in spot and forward transactions totalled 67.5 GWh in July, and reached the incremental volume of 532.1 GWh since the beginning of the year.

The Warsaw Stock Exchange has published its July data on trading volumes recorded on WSE‑operated markets.

 

Equities Market1)

Main Market

In July 2013, the value of trading in equities on the Main Market was PLN 15.9 billion, an increase of 1.2% versus July 2012. The average daily trading volume dropped by 3.2% from PLN 714.7 million in July 2012 to PLN 691.9 million in July 2013.

The value of session trading in the first seven months of 2013 grew from PLN 112.8 billion to PLN 127.7 billion (i.e. by 13.2% year on year).

The total equities trading volume on the Main Market in July 2013 equalled PLN 18.9 billion, down by 1.8% versus July 2012 (PLN 19.2 billion). In accrued terms, the trading volume reached PLN 151.0 billion YTD and was 23.9% higher versus the respective period of 2012.

During the twelve months until the end of July 2013, the WIG index rose by 16.8%, but dropped by 1.1% on the year-to-date basis.

NewConnect

The total trading volume on NewConnect went up by 69.2%, from PLN 53.9 million in July 2012 to PLN 91.3 million in July 2013. In accrued terms, the value of trading on NewConnect reached PLN 587.7 million YTD, down by 29.0% in comparison with the first seven months of 2012.

NCIndex lost 9.8% YTD and dropped by 11.5% YOY.

Derivatives Market2)

Futures contracts: The monthly trading volume in index futures totalled 0.56 million contracts in July 2013 versus 0.67 million in July 2012 (down by 17.0%). The average daily trading volume reached 24.3 thousand contracts in July 2013 versus 30.6 thousand in July one year earlier. The number of open positions in index futures grew by 26.0% year on year, to 107.5 thousand at the end of July 2013.

The volume of trading in index futures totalled 4.9 million contracts YTD, which marks a decline by 14.8% versus 5.7 million contracts in January–July 2012.

The trading volume in equity futures rose by 48.0% in July 2013 versus July 2012 (from 36.1 thousand to 53.3 thousand). On the other hand, the trading volume in currency futures reached 332.3 thousand contracts in July 2013, up by 229.4% year on year.

Options: In July 2013 the trading volume in WIG20 options reached 62.5 thousand, which translated into a 41.5% growth year on year (44.2 thousand in July 2012). In accrued terms, the trading volume in options rose by 37.9% from 341.9 thousand in January-July 2012 to 471.4 thousand since the year beginning.

Debt Instruments

Catalyst

At the end of July 2013, the value of issued instruments (corporate, municipal and mortgage bonds) stood at PLN 56.7 billion versus PLN 48.2 billion in July 2012 (up by 17.6%). The monthly value of session trading increased by 23.4%, from PLN 176.5 million in July 2012 to PLN 217.8 million in July 2013.

Treasury BondSpot Poland

In July 2013, the value of cash transactions on Treasury BondSpot Poland dropped by 49.7% year on year, to PLN 24.8 billion. The volume of conditional transactions fell from PLN 45.5 billion in July 2012 to PLN 28.3 billion in July 2013.

Structured Instruments

Structured products and investment certificates: The aggregate value of trading in structured products and investment certificates grew by 128.5% from PLN 11.2 million in July 2012 to PLN 25.7 million in July 2013.

ETFs: In July 2013 the value of trading in ETFs was PLN 10.2 million compared to PLN 10.8 million one year earlier (down by 6.0%).

Commodities Market3)

Electricity: The volume of trading in futures transactions on the electricity market in July 2013 reached 16.3 TWh and was twice as high as one year earlier. This is the highest monthly figure in futures in 2013 to date. In accrued terms, the trading volume on the energy futures market climbed by 105.2% YTD, reaching 78.0 TWh. The trading volume of spot transactions in electricity rose from 1.6 TWh in July 2012 to 1.8 TWh in July 2013 (up by 12.3%).

Property rights: The monthly trading volume in property rights dropped by 47.3% in July 2013 versus July 2012, from 3.5 TWh to 1.8 TWh. On a year-to-date basis, the trading volume in property rights reached 29.5 TWh, which was by 21.3% lower than 37.5 TWh in the respective period of 2012.

Natural gas: The total trading volume on the gas market in July 2013 reached 67.5 GWh       (29.5 GWh in spot transactions and 37.9 GWh in futures). In accrued terms, the total volume of gas trading reached 532.1 GWh year on year.

In July 2013, a total of 23 trading sessions were held, i.e. one more session compared with July 2012.

  1. Transactions in equities, rights to shares and subscription rights.
  2. Starting from 1 May 2012, the trading volume in currency futures has been calculated on the basis of a trading unit equal to 1,000 contracts (previously: 10,000 contracts). Accordingly, the data presented in accrued terms (trading volume in currency futures and total trading volume in derivatives) are not fully comparable to data from previous periods.
  3. Transactions on poee WSE EM (until 31 March 2013) and the Polish Power Exchange. The WSE acquired a majority stake in the Polish Power Exchange on 24 February 2012. The gas exchange was launched in December as part of the Polish Power Exchange.
