Trading On The Spanish Market Hit A New Record High In The First Quarter, Posting € 203.78 Bn

  • In March trading in equities on the Spanish market through SIBE reached € 62.26 bn, 2.5% up on the same month in 2004.
  • Trading on the Latibex market hit a monthly high, posting € 42.7 million.
  • Trading volume in MEFF in the first quarter was 28% up on 2004, reaching 9.4 million contracts. During the same period, trading in stock futures was 4.2 million contracts, 61 % up on the year.
  • Trading volume in Corporate Debt on AIAF was € 69.14 bn, 32.8% up on the same month in 2004.
Equities

In March trading in equities on the Spanish market through SIBE amounted to € 62.26 bn, which represents a year on year increase at 2.5%. The accumulated value of trading in the first quarter came in at € 203.78 bn, which exceeds by 20% the quarterly record hit in the first quarter last year.

These figures bring the daily value of trading in March to € 2.96 bn, up 12.28% on the same month last year. The number of daily transactions in the period exceeded 66,300, 2% up year on year.

Trading on the Latibex market in March exceeded € 42.7 million, which represents a 10% increase from the previous monthly high, bringing the trading daily average to over € 2.1 million, the highest value posted by this market.

The accumulated value of trading in the first quarter was 118 million euros, hitting a new quarterly high which exceeds the value posted in 2004 by 29%.

The return on the IBEX 35 index in March was down 1.41% in March bringing the accumulated return on the index from January to 1.96%. The return on the IBEX 35 with dividends in the same period was 2.67% and that on the FTSE Latibex Top index was 7%.

Warrants and Certificates

Trading volumes in March 2005 on the warrants and certificates market came in at € 186 million. The accumulated value of trading on this market in the first quarter was € 550 million, 5.5% up on the previous quarter and 1% up on the same period in 2004.

Futures and options

Trading volume in MEFF options and futures in March was 5.52 million contracts, 28% up on the same month last year. The trading volume on MEFF in the first quarter of this year was 9.39 million contracts, up 28% on the same period last year. It is worth mentioning the trend followed by stock futures, where trading reached 4.21 million contracts, up 61% year on year.

Corporate Debt

Corporate Debt trading on AIAF in March reached € 69.14 bn, a 32.8 % increase compared to the same period last year.

New issues in March came in at € 32 bn, 14.1% up on the same month in 2004. The outstanding balance at the end of March was € 333.38 bn, 51.2% up on the same period in 2004. Net financing came at € 25.35 bn, up 11.5% on the value reached at the end of the same month last year.

SENAF

Trading volume on SENAF in March was € 27.07 bn, up 24.8% on the previous month.

SENAF’s market share of trading in all domestic trading platforms in March was 74.44%, slightly above the level reached the previous month, which was 71.74%.
