TMX Group Inc. today announced August 2011 trading statistics for its diversified group of exchanges. Trading statistics for TMX Select, TMX Group's alternative trading system, have been added to the monthly report, which also includes Toronto Stock Exchange, TSX Venture Exchange, Montreal Exchange (MX) and Natural Gas Exchange (NGX).
Highlights
In August 2011, MX set a new record in average daily volume of 280,809 contracts traded, surpassing the previous record of 280,217 contracts traded that was achieved in June 2011. In addition, MX achieved a record in overall volume for the month with 6,179,988 contracts traded, which exceeded the previous record of 6,164,764 contracts traded set in June 2011.
In August 2011, volume on MX increased by 62% over August 2010 and was up 23% compared to July 2011. Open interest contracts on MX increased by 25% during August 2011 compared to August 2010 and 1% over July 2011. Year-to-date, volume and open interest in 2011 well exceed 2010 levels.
Trading volume on Toronto Stock Exchange was up 43% in August 2011 compared to the month earlier and was up 29% compared to the same month in 2010. Transactions were up both compared to the previous month and year-over-year, with increases of 71% and 58% respectively.
In August 2011, trading volume on TSX Venture Exchange increased 1% over July 2011, though was down 8% compared to August 2010. Transactions on the Exchange were up 3% over July 2011 and were up 88% compared to the same month a year earlier. On a year-to-date basis, TSX Venture Exchange and Toronto Stock Exchange both continue to surpass 2010 levels in volume, value and transactions.
TMX Select launched on July 11, 2011 with trading on eight symbols. The full rollout of all Toronto Stock Exchange and TSX Venture Exchange symbols was completed on August 8, 2011.
Trading and clearing volume on NGX was up 4% in August 2011 compared to the previous month, though it was down 32% compared to August 2010. On a year-to-date basis, volume on NGX was down 9% during the first eight months of 2011 compared to the same period in 2010.
