Toronto Stock Exchange Breaks Yearly Trading Record

For the 8th consecutive year, the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSE) has smashed its yearly trading record. The year's value today topped $530 billion -- breaking the previous mark set in 1999.

Since the string of records began in 1993, trading value on the TSE has jumped more than 260 percent.

It is expected before long, new yearly records will be set for shares traded and transactions. As of the close of trading on July 12, 2000, 23.8 billion shares have changed hands -- trailing the previous yearly record of 29.28 billion shares traded set in 1999.

There have been many records at the TSE in 2000.

Among these: Daily transaction record -- 249,722 on March 6, 2000; Daily Volume, 326.6 million shares on February 17, 2000; Daily Value Record, $15.6 billion on May 2, 2000; Monthly Volume, 5.28 billion set in February 2000; Monthly Value $102.7 billion set in March 2000; Monthly Transactions 4.04 million set in March 2000; Record High Close for the TSE 300 Index 10572.85 on July 12, 2000.
