Tokyo Stock Exchange: 25th Anniversary Event Held For U.S.-listed SPDR® S&P 500® ETF’

The Tokyo Stock Exchange, Inc. commemorated the 25th anniversary of the U.S. listing of the world’s largest ETF, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (TSE: 1557, NYSE Arca: SPY), which is managed by State Street Global Advisors, at a ceremony held at the TSE Arrows Open Platform on Tuesday, January 30th, 2018.

At the ceremony, Mr. Koichiro Miyahara, President & CEO of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Inc., presented the President & Representative Director of State Street Global Advisors (Japan) Co., Ltd., Mr. Takashi Takamura, with a wooden mallet, which Mr. Takamura, Board Director David A. Collins, and Head of ETF Products Masaki Sugihara used to strike the exchange’s ceremonial bell.

The SPY ETF trades as much as US$19 billion on average on a daily basis in the U.S. and is known as being the largest and the most liquid* ETF in the world.

SSGA’s Mr. Takamura remarked that “We pioneered the ETF market with SPY, which is used widely by investors in the U.S. and around the world including Japan. On January 23rd, 2018, SPY reached US$300 billion in assets under management.”

Furthermore, he stated, “SPY provides investors with an efficient means of gaining diversified exposure to 500 companies representing the U.S. equity market, and we were pleased to cross-list this ETF on the TSE on March 24th, 2011 to provide Japanese investors with further convenience.”

On January 29th, 2018 in the U.S., a 25th anniversary commemorative ceremony was held at the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange, too.
