Tokyo Commodity Exchange, Inc. (TOCOM) has made an agreement to partner with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (Tokyo MG) on its project for trial trading of green hydrogen. TOCOM will carry out said trial trading in collaboration with the Tokyo MG this December.
The Japanese government is actively considering how hydrogen can be utilized as an important energy source on the road to carbon neutrality by 2050, including its formulation of a Basic Hydrogen Strategy. The Tokyo MG has also positioned green hydrogen, which is obtained through the use of renewable energy, as a key to decarbonization and is working to expand its use accordingly. As part of this, TOCOM supports the idea of building a hydrogen exchange as being considered by the Tokyo MG and would like to contribute to this. It will therefore utilize the expertise in market operations held by JPX Group to collaborate with the Tokyo MG to build the project's rule framework and operate the market.
JPX has launched a dedicated page for the green hydrogen trial trading project (in Japanese only) on 29 November 2024 and will continue to update this page with the latest information.
