TMX Group Inc. today announced September trading statistics for its diversified group of exchanges – Toronto Stock Exchange, TSX Venture Exchange, Montreal Exchange (MX) and Natural Gas Exchange (NGX), as well as TMX Select, TMX Group’s alternative trading system.
Highlights
Montreal Exchange achieved a monthly record for open interest in September 2011 with 4,404,867 contracts, which surpassed the previous record of 4,361,887 contracts that was set in June 2011. In September 2011, open interest contracts were up 4% over August 2011, and increased 33% compared to September 2010. Volume was up 39% in September 2011 over the same month a year earlier, though was down 10% compared to August 2011. Year-to-date, both volume and open interest contracts were significantly ahead of 2010 levels.
Transactions on Toronto Stock Exchange were up 18% in September 2011 compared to the same month a year earlier, though fell 15% compared to August 2011. Trading volume was down 6% compared to August 2011 and down 10% compared to September 2010. Year-to-date, the Exchange continued to exceed 2010 levels across all measures.
Trading volume on TSX Venture Exchange was up 3% in September 2011 compared to August 2011, though was down 42% from the same month a year earlier. Transactions on the Exchange fell 6% compared to the previous month and 3% compared to September 2010. Volume, value and transactions all continued to surpass 2010 levels on a year-to-date basis.
In September 2011, volume on TMX Select increased 71% compared to August 2011, while transactions were up 61%. TMX Select was launched on July 11, 2011 with trading on eight symbols. The full rollout of all Toronto Stock Exchange and TSX Venture Exchange symbols was completed on August 8, 2011.
Trading volume on NGX increased 2% in September 2011 over August 2011, though it was down 20% compared to the same month a year earlier. Year-to-date, volume was down 11% compared to the same period in 2010.
