The Stock Exchange Of Hong Kong January Market Statistics

The average daily turnover for the 21 trading days in January was HKD 17,492 million, an increase of 38% compared with the previous month and 235% as compared with HKD 5,222 million in January 1999. Total turnover value for the month was HKD 367,325 million compared with HKD 265,648 million last month and HKD 104,448 million in January 1999.
A total of 372,229 million shares changed hands in January, compared with 190,063 million shares last month and 49,228 million shares in January 1999. The average daily turnover by volume was 17,725 million shares, up 96% from last month and 620% when compared with 2,461 million shares in January 1999.
The total number of trades during the month was 4,827,711 which was 45% more than in December 1999.
After experiencing a sharp decline at the beginning of the month, both the All Ordinaries Index and Hang Seng Index fluctuated up and down throughout January.
The All Ordinaries Index at the end of January was 6721.81, a decrease of 6% from last month but an increase of 69% from January 1999. Its highest closing for January was 7340.68 on the 3rd and its lowest was 6403.63 on the 6th.
The Hang Seng Index at the end of January was 15532.34, a decrease of 8% from last month but an increase of 63% from January 1999. Its highest closing for January was 17369.63 on the 3rd and its lowest was 15103.04 on the 25th.
As at 31 January 2000, the total number of members was 571 with a total of 929 shares.
There were 139 individual members, of which 85 were classified as trading members who held a total of 91 shares, and 432 corporate members, of which 406 were classified as trading members who held a total of 751 shares. The total number of non-trading members was 80 with 87 shares.
The market capitalisation at the end of January 2000 was HKD 4,467,111 million compared with HKD 2,454,640 million on the same date last year, an increase of HKD 2,012,471 million or 82 per cent.
The total number of listed companies was 703 on 31 January 2000 against 680 on 31 January 1999.
During the month of January, 2 new companies were listed: UBA Investment Ltd and Ching Hing (Holdings) Ltd; and no deletion occurred.
In January, stock options trading volume increased by 9% from the previous month and total open interest increased by 21%. A total of 251,029 contracts were traded during the month and the average daily contract volume was 11,954 contracts.
