A total of 415,781 million shares changed hands in February, compared with 372,229 million shares last month and 32,940 million shares in February 1999. The average daily turnover by volume was 21,883 million shares, up 23 per cent from last month and 1,029 per cent when compared with 1,938 million shares in February 1999.
The total number of trades during the month was 5,419,331 which was 12 per cent more than in January.
Average daily turnover for the first two months of the year was HKD 19,675 million, compared with HKD 4,272 million in the same period last year. Total turnover by value was HKD 786,991 million during the first two months of the year, compared with HKD158,054 million for the same period last year.
During the first two months of this year, average daily turnover by volume was 19,700 million shares, compared with 2,221 million shares during the corresponding period of 1999. A total of 788,010 million shares were traded during the first two months of this year, compared with 82,168 million shares during the same period of 1999.
The market experienced a significant rise at the beginning of the month, with the Hang Seng Index reaching its new historical high on the 11th closing at 17380.30. Although there was some downside pressure afterwards, the indices managed to close at levels considerably higher than last month.
The All Ordinaries Index at the end of February was 7363.68 an increase of 10 per cent from last month and 82 per cent from February 1999. Its highest closing for February was 7648.02 on the 11th and its lowest was 6791.10 on the 1st.
The Hang Seng Index at the end of February was 17169.44, an increase of 11 per cent from last month and 74 per cent from February 1999. Its highest closing for February was 17380.33 on the 11th and its lowest was 15653.86 on the 1st.
The market capitalisation at the end of February 2000 was HKD 4,925,227 million compared with HKD 2,503,471 million on the same date last year, an increase of HKD 2,421,756 million or 97%.
The total number of listed companies was 707 on 29 February 2000 against 679 on 28 February 1999.
