The average daily turnover for the 21 trading days in December was HKD12,650 million, an increase of 16 per cent compared with the previous month. Total turnover value for the month was HKD265,648 million compared with HKD239,400 million in November. A total of 190,063 million shares changed hands in December, compared with 140,772 million shares in November. The average daily turnover by volume was 9,051 million shares, up 41 per cent from November. The total number of trades during the month was 3,328,393 which was 31 per cent more than in November. Average daily turnover for the year was HKD7,757 million, compared with HKD6,887 million for 1998. Total turnover by value was HKD1,915,941 million during 1999, compared with HKD1,701,112 million during 1998. For 1999, the average daily turnover by volume was 5,637 million shares, compared with 3,305 million shares for 1998. A total of 1,392,284 million shares were traded during 1999, compared with 816,358 million shares during 1998. Both the All Ordinaries Index and Hang Seng Index continued to fluctuate upward during December, with the Hang Seng Index closing at its all-time high. The All Ordinaries Index at the end of December was 7134.79, an increase of 12 per cent from last month and 65 per cent from December 1998. Its highest closing for December was 7137.12 on the 28th and its lowest was 6402.33 on the 1st. The Hang Seng Index at the end of December was 16962.10, an increase of 10 per cent from last month and 69 per cent from December 1998. Its highest closing for December was 16962.10 on the 30th and its lowest was 15422.52 on the 1st. The market capitalisation at the end of December 1999 was HKD4,727,527 million compared with HKD2,661,713 million on the same date last year, an increase of HKD2,065,814 million or 78 per cent. The total number of listed companies was 701 on 31 December 1999 against 680 on 31 December 1998.
