The Spanish Stock Exchange Trades 16.6 Billion Shares In October, More Than Double The Figure Of The Previous Month - The Trading Volume Was €91.3 Bn, The Second Highest Monthly Figure So Far This Year

  • The number of Equity trades grew by 15.3% from the previous month, at 3.53 million, the best monthly figure so far this year.
  • Trading in Futures and Options whose underlying assets are equities totaled 68.7 million contracts to the end of October, up 6.4% from the entire figure registered in 2008 for contracts whose underlying assets are Equities.
  • Trading in the Corporate Debt market exceeded €3 trillion in the first ten months, up 73.9% from the same period in 2008.

Equities

The number of shares traded on the Spanish stock exchange in October came in at 16.6 bn, up 29.5% from the same month in 2008, representing more than double the figure of the previous month and a monthly record high. The number of shares traded in the first ten months of the year reached 98.7 bn, up 3.7% from the same period in 2008.

In October the number of trades increased by 15.3% from the previous month to 3.53 million, the figure being 17% down from the same period in 2008. The number of trades in the first ten months of the year totaled 26.7 million, down 15% from the same period in 2008.

The Equities trading volume in October was €91.3 bn, up 39% from the previous month and down 23.4% from the same period a year earlier. The trading volume in the first ten months of the year reached €729.4 bn, down 34.2% from the same period a year ago.

The number of trades on the exchange-traded fund (ETF) segment to the end of October reached €41,982, up 111% from the same period in 2008. In October 2009 the number of trades on this segment was 5,333, a record high for this segment and it represents a 50.3% increase from October 2008. In October the ETF trading volume came in at €290.6 million while in the first ten months it totaled €2.6 bn.

Futures and Options

In October trading on MEFF, BME’s Derivatives Market, came in at 5.8 million Futures and Options contracts, with heavy trading in Options on Stocks, at 3.6 million contracts, up 117% from October last year.

The number of contracts traded in the first ten months of the year was 79.5 million contracts, up 17% from the same period in 2008. It is worth mentioning that trading in Futures and Options whose underlying assets are equities totaled 68.7 million contracts to the end of October, up 6.4% from the entire figure registered in 2008 for this type of products.

Also worthy of note is the trading volume in Options on Stocks on this market to the end of October, which totalled 28.4 million contracts, up 109% from the same period in 2008. Other highlights include Stocks Futures, at 40.3 million contracts, up 5% from the same period a year earlier

Warrants and Certificates

The number of warrants admitted to trading to the end of October was 6,191.

The trading volume in October on the warrants and certificates market came in at €153.5 million, up 11.8% from the previous month. The number of trades reached 32,071, up 10.5% from September.

The trading volume to the end of October on this segment came in at €1.5 bn, down 39.5% from 2008 while the number of trades was 309,009, down 39.8% from the same period a year earlier.

Corporate Debt

The trading volume in the first ten months of the year exceeded €3 trillion (€3,12 trillion), up 73.9% from the same period a year earlier. Corporate Debt trading in October was €249.8 bn, down 18.1% from the same period a year ago.

New issues in October came in at €24.2 bn, down 25.5% from the same period a year earlier. The total volume of new issues to the end of October was €344.2 bn, down 11.4% from the same period last year.

The outstanding balance at the end of October was €881.5bn, up 9.9% from a year earlier.
