The Spanish Stock Exchange Trades €1.1 Trillion In Equities Up To October - The Number Of Trades Grows 30.8% Up To October, From The Same Period A Year Earlier, To 31.5 Million

Equities

The number of trades on the Spanish stock exchange in October came in at 4.2 million, up 30.8% from the same month in 2007 and represents the second busiest month of all times. The number of equity trades increased by 9.6% in the first tenth months of the year from a year earlier to 31.5 million, from 28.7million in the same period in 2007.

The trading volume for the first tenth months of the year totaled €1.1 trillion, up 21.5% from the same period in 2006 and down 21.1% from the same period in 2007. The equity trading volume reported by the Spanish electronic order book (SIBE) in October came in at €119.24bn, up 17.2% from September and down 21% from the same month a year earlier without taking into account the extraordinary financial operations of October 2007.

Up to October trading on the ETFs segment reached €6.5bn, up 69.2% from the same period in 2007. In October 2008 trading on this segment was €1.2bn.

Futures and Options

In October trading on BME’s Derivatives Market came in at 6.5 million contracts, up 50% from a year earlier. In October IBEX Mini Futures reported a monthly record high, at 400,736 contracts, up 52% from a year earlier. Also worth mentioning are Stocks Futures, which grew by 92% from a year earlier, to 3.1 million contracts. Trading on Stocks Options came in at 1.7 million contracts, up 56% from a year earlier.

The trading volume on this market for the first tenth months of the year totaled 68.1 million contracts, up 75% from the same period in 2007. Highlights include Stock Futures, which posted 38.4 million contracts and a year on year increase of 169% and IBEX Options, with 6.8 million contracts and a 46% increase from a year earlier.

Warrants and Certificates

The number of warrants admitted to trading to the end of October was 7,793, up 32% from the same period in 2007.

Trading volumes in October on the warrants and certificates market came in at €302.2million and the number of trades reached 73.820, the third best monthly figure since the launching of this segment.

The trading volume to the end of October on this segment came in at €2.6bn, down 41.6% from 2007 while the number of trades was 513.498, down 27.3% from the same period a year earlier.

Corporate Debt

Corporate Debt trading in October was €304.94bn, up 204.8% from the same period a year ago and an all times monthly record. The trading volume in the first tenth months of the year was €1.8 trillion, up 94.5% from the same period a year earlier.

The number of trades on this market in October came in at 111,606, up 59% from the same month in 2007. The number of fixed income trades increased by 16.3% in the first tenth months of the year from a year earlier to 660,493.

New issues in October came in at €32.4bn, down 41.3% from a year earlier. The total volume of new issues to the end of October was €388.6bn, down 29.5% from the same period last year. The outstanding balance at the end of October was €802.2bn, up 8.4% from a year earlier.

Public Debt

In October trading volume on BME’S Public Debt market was €3.5bn, representing a 76% market share of all the domestic trading platforms in Spain.
