The number of trades increased by 7% in 2008
- In December trading in equities on the Spanish stock market reached €60.97 bn.
- ETF trading in 2008 came in at €.93 bn, up 48.8% from a year earlier.
- MEFF trading hit a yearly record high, at 83.4 million Options and Futures contracts, up 61% from the year 2007.
- Trading volume on the Corporate Debt market in 2008 hit a yearly record high.
Equities
The number of trades in 2008 was 36.9 million, up 7% from 34.5 million a year earlier. In December the number of trades reached 2.1 million.
The trading volume in 2008 was €.24 trillion, up 8% from the year 2006 and down 25.4% from the year 2007. In December the equity trading volume reported by the Spanish electronic order book (SIBE) reached €0.97 bn, down 43% from the same month in 2007.
As for the exchange traded funds segment, the trading volume in 2008 totalled €.93 bn, up 48% from 2007. In December the number of trades reported by this segment posted a year-on-year increase of over 71%.

Warrants and Certificates
The number of warrants admitted to trading in 2008 was 9,827, up 40% from the year 2007. The figure represents a yearly record high in the number of warrants listed on this segment. Trading volumes in December on the warrants and certificates market came in at €160.8 million and the number of trades reached 30,948. The trading volume on this segment in 2008 came in at €2.96 bn, down 42.8% from 2007 while the number of trades was 584,718, down 30% from the same period a year earlier.
Futures and options
In December trading on MEFF, BME's Derivatives Market, came in at 8.9 million contracts, up 4% from a year earlier. Highlights include Options on Stocks, with 2.8 million contracts traded, up 67% from the same period a year earlier, and IBEX 35 Options, with 882,955 contracts traded, up 37% from a year earlier. The total trading volume recorded in 2008 reached a record high, at 83.4 million contracts, up 61% from 2007. By product, it is worth mentioning the annual trading volume of Futures on Stocks, at 46.2 million contracts, up 117% from 2007, IBEX 35 Options, up 46% from a year earlier, at 8.3 million contracts and Options on Stocks, up 35% from a year earlier, at 18.3 million contracts. The three figures represent record highs.
Corporate Debt The value of trading on the Corporate Debt market in 2008 hit a record high, at €2.4 trillion, up 116.6% from a year earlier and double the trading volume recorded in 2007.
The trading volume in December was €312.60 million, up 228.7% from the same period a year earlier. The number of trades in 2008 also hit a record high, at 807,800, up 20.6% from a year earlier. New issues in 2008 came in at €476.94 bn, down 25.6% from a year earlier. The total volume of new issues in December was €45.45 bn, of which €22.33 bn correspond to the medium and long term segment, which grew by 31.3% from the same month in 2007. The outstanding balance at the end of 2008 was €819.63 bn, up 8.1% from a year earlier.
SENAF
The trading volume on BME'S Public Debt market in 2008 was €82.08 bn, representing a 60.4% market share of all the domestic trading platforms in Spain.
