The Spanish Stock Exchange Traded €925.32 Billion In 2011 On A Record Number Of Trades

Equities

The equity trading volume on the Spanish Stock Exchange in 2011 totalled €925.32 billion, down 10.8% from a year earlier. However the number of trades for the same period reached 45.8 million, up 13.2% on the figure for 2010 and a yearly record high.

The trading volume in December came in at €59.36 billion, down 17% from December 2010 and the number of trades in the same period reached 2.8 million.

As for the ETF segment, the trading volume in 2011 totalled €3.49 billion, down 41.4% year on year. In December the trading volume was €305 million, up 67% on December 2010.

The total number of trades in ETFs in 2011 reached 43,461, down 31.1% from 2010. The number of trades in December totaled 2,848, down 6.6% from the same period in 2010.

Futures and options

In 2011 trading on BME’s Derivatives Market came in at 67.6 million contracts, down 3.7% from a year earlier. Within the same period, it is worth mentioning the trading in Futures on Stocks, with 27.6 million contracts traded, up 40% from 2010.

In December trading came in at 8.3 million contracts, with heavy trading in Options on Stocks, which posted a record high, at 4.2 million contracts.

Warrants and Certificates

The number of warrants admitted to trading in 2011 was 9,163. Activity on the market during the year reached €1.64 billion, up 1% from 2010. In December, the trading volume came in at €92.5 million, down 22% year on year.

The number of trades in 2011 in this market was 303,947, down 12.6% from a year earlier. In December the number of trades was 18,879, down 25% from December 2010.

Corporate Debt

The trading volume on the Corporate Debt market in 2011 came in at €5.4 trillion, up 48.8% year on year. In December the trading volume came in at €385.16 billion, down 33.3% year on year.

New issues in 2011 totalled €278.55 billion, up 24.7% from the same period a year earlier.  In December new issues came in at €43.72 billion, up 145.5% year on year.

The outstanding balance at the end of 2011 was €882.39 billion, up 3.8% from a year earlier.

In 2011 trading on BME’s Public Debt electronic platform reached €82.76 billion, down 65.4% year on year. However the number of trades reached 12,144, up 9.1% from a year earlier.
