The Spanish Stock Exchange Traded €70.38 Billion In May, Up 7% From The Previous Month

Equities

The equity trading volume on the Spanish Stock Exchange in May was €70.38 billion, up 7% from the previous month but 15% down on the same period last year. The trading volume for the first five months totaled €313.08 billion, down 23.9% from the same period in 2011.

The number of trades in May came in at 4.7 million, up 39% from May 2011 and is a monthly record high. The number of trades to the end of May totaled 20.6 million, up 3.8% from the same period last year.

As for the ETF segment, the trading volume in May came in at €224 million, up 51.7% from April 2012 and down 1.9% from the same period last year. The trading volume to the end of May came in at €827 million, down 43% from May last year.

The number of trades in ETFs to May was 6,936, up 37.4% from the previous month and up 152% over the same period in 2011. The number of trades to the end of May reached 21,038, a 9.4% increase year on year.

Futures and options

In May trading on BME’s Derivatives Market came in at 5.4 million contracts, up 26.2% from the same period last year. The trading volume to the end of May totaled 28.3 million contracts, up 3.7% year on year.

There was a pick-up in trading in all products, especially Futures on Options. Trading in these contracts increased by 41.8% year on year to 1.7 million contracts.

Trading in Index Futures,  at 941,771 contracts in May, grew 41% year on year and Options on Indices posted a 101% increase in trading to 349,970 contracts in the same period.

Warrants and Certificates

The volume of warrants and certificates admitted to trading in 2012 totaled 3,016.Trading on the Warrants and Certificates market to the end of May totalled  €371 million, down 44% from the same period in 2011. The trading volume on this market in May came in at €68.7 million, up 31% year on year.

The number of trades to the end of May in this market totaled 94,734, down 24% year on year. The number of trades in May reached 18,303, up 11.5% from the previous month and 12% lower than in May 2011.

Corporate Debt

In May trading on BME’s Corporate Debt market reached €140.85 billion, down 65.2% from the same period last year. Trading to the end of May totaled €973.70 billion, down 62.2% year on year, although there was a pick-up in trading to maturity, at €205.36 billion, up 32.5% year on year.

The number of trades for this period was 571,957, up 96.7% year on year.

New issues in May reached €17.32 billion, down 42.3% from May 2011. New issues for the first five months of the year totaled 163,800, up 28.4% year on year.
