The Spanish Stock Exchange Traded €61.30 Billion In March, Up 34% From The Previous Month - Monthly Trading Statements For BME Markets

Equities

The equity trading volume on the Spanish Stock Exchange in March was €61.30 billion, up 34% from the previous month. The trading volume for the first quarter totaled €176.93 billion, down 28% from the same period in 2011.

The number of trades in March came in at 4 million, up 17% from February. The number of trades for the first quarter totaled 11.3 million, down 13% from the same period last year.

As for the ETF segment, the trading volume to March came in at €454 million, down 58% from the same period last year. In March the trading volume came in at €123 million, down 12% from the previous month.

The number of trades in ETFs to March totaled 9,055, down 35% from the same period in 2011. In March the number of trades reached 3,751, a 50% increase from the previous month.

Futures and options

In March trading on BME’s Derivatives Market came in at 9.7 million contracts, almost triple the amount recorded in the previous month and the highest figure so far this year and in the whole 2011. The trading volume to March totaled 18.5 million contracts.

All the segments and contracts show increases in trading volume, especially Index Futures, which grew by 35% year-on-year, to 620,486 contracts, and Index Options, which increased by 100% year-on-year, to 253,511 contracts.

Trading in Stock Futures reached 4.3 million contracts, more than five times that of the previous month, in this way becoming the highest figure recorded in the last three quarters.

In March, trading in Options on stocks increased by 129% from the previous month, to 4.5 million contracts, a record high for this segment.

Warrants and Certificates

The volume of warrants and certificates admitted to trading in 2012 totalled 1,716, up 11% from the same period last year.

In March trading on the Warrants and Certificates market reached €80 million, down 3.5% from the previous month. The trading volume on this market to March totaled €250 million, down 47% from the same period in 2011.

The number of trades in March in this market totaled 20,547, up 4% from the previous month. The number of trades in the first quarter totaled 60,019, down 30% from the previous year.

Corporate Debt

In March trading on BME’s Corporate Debt market reached €163.96 billion, down 16.8% from the previous month. The trading volume to March totaled €605.57 billion.

New issues in March reached €53.64 billion, the highest volume posted so far this year and in 2011 as a whole, showing a 21% increase from a month earlier.

The outstanding balance at the end of March exceeded, for the first time, the €900 billion barrier, at €906.22 billion, up 2.5% from the same month a year earlier.
